Abstact: “To build resilient futures, terrestrial ecology must actively work on bridging nature and society through participatory and engaged research. Initiatives grounded in citizen science and hands-on participatory activities offer new opportunities to connect people with terrestrial ecosystems. These initiatives not only support data collection crucial for monitoring spatial ecology and biodiversity loss under global change but also enhance participants ecological literacy, fostering a deeper appreciation of forests, grasslands, and urban green spaces.
A key value of these activities is capturing citizens perception of environments and restoration actions, providing vital complementary knowledge that traditional monitoring may overlook, including human health concerns aligned with the One Health perspective. To strengthen this, ecology benefits from multistakeholder approaches and the quadruple helix model, which promotes cooperation between academia, public authorities, industry, and citizens. Applying this framework encourages integrated and participatory citizen participation and decision-making where conservation, social, and economic interests intersect, leading to inclusive environmental governance.
However, concepts like environmental literacy, citizen science, and stakeholder engagement often operate in parallel. Bringing these dimensions together could significantly enhance the impact of ecology on both scientific outcomes and community involvement. In this special session, we welcome everyone who brings terrestrial ecology closer to society. “
We encourage you to submit your work and share this call with colleagues who might be interested.
Best regards,
---
